Connecting the Exhaustivity of Clefts and the Homogeneity of Plural Definite Descriptions in Acquisition

چکیده
Various views exist on the kind of meaning that the exhaustivity component of clefts corresponds to, and therefore on the status that clefts have when exhaustivity is violated. In particular, two semantic theories have recently been spelled out in some detail. According to Velleman et al. (2012), (1) carries the presupposition that it’s not the case that both the truck and something else are blue, and asserts that the truck is, in fact, blue. When exhaustivity fails, the cleft therefore incurs a presupposition failure. The presupposition is, in particular, taken to be akin to that of “only”. Alternatively, Büring & Križ (2013) and Križ (2016) have argued that exhaustivity in clefts should be unified with the phenomenon of homogeneity, which can be observed in plural definite descriptions: both (2a) and (2b) are neither true nor false when the set of trucks is not homogeneous with respect to blueness, i.e. when some are blue and some are not (see, among others, Löbner 2000 and Križ 2015).

The or That: Definite and Demonstrative Descriptions in Second Language Acquisition
Since Heubner's (1985) pioneering study, there have been many studies on (mis) use/ non-use of articles by L2 learners from article-less and article languages. The present study investigated how Persian L2 learners of English produce and interpret English definite descriptions and demonstrative descriptions. It was assumed that definite and demonstrative descriptions share the same central sema...
متن کاملCount-mass Distinction in the Acquisition of English Articles by Persian Learners of English
Articles in general and definite articles in particular can create problems even long after all other aspects of English have been mastered. The present article investigated the learnability problems related to the acquisition of count-mass distinction of English nominals by Persian L2 learners. The theoretical underpinning of the study is the interpretability hypothesis (Tsimpli & Dimitrakopou...
متن کاملEvaluating the Effectiveness of Deductive and Inductive Form-Focused In-struction on Iranian EFL Learners' Implicit and Explicit Knowledge of Non-Generic Definite Article
This study investigated the relative effects of deductive and inductive form-focused instruction (FFI) on the acquisition of 4 non-generic definite article uses(cultural, situational, structural, and textual) as assessed by explicit and implicit outcome measures. The tests utilized to assess EFL learners' acquisition of definite article uses were timed and untimed grammaticality judgment tests....
متن کاملTwo methods to find truth value gaps and their application to the projection problem of homogeneity
Presupposition, vagueness, and oddness can lead some sentences to fail to have a clear truth value. The homogeneity property of plural predication with definite descriptions may also create truth-value gaps: The books are written in Dutch is true if all relevant books are in Dutch, false if none of them is, and neither true nor false if, say, half of the books are written in Dutch. We study the...
متن کاملAcquisition of exhaustivity in wh-questions: A semantic dimension of SLI?
This paper investigates how exhaustivity in single and multiple wh-questions is acquired in German-speaking children with SLI. Comparing semantic and pragmatic accounts of exhaustivity, obligatory exhaustivity of multiple wh-questions is argued to be problematic for pragmatic approaches. Thus, a unified semantic approach is suggested$chosen that relates exhaustivity to an inherent property of t...
